Setting to develop home-grown talents and ace opportunities for the Bicolano athletes, the Provincial Government of Albay, through Governor Noel E. Rosal, launched the first-ever Bicol Open Invitational One-Day League Volleyball Tournament for men and women, last September 10 and 11, 2022, respectively, at the Albay Astrodome.
The said tournament was participated by two school-based teams, the Naga College Foundation, Inc. (NCF) Tigers and the University of Nueva Caceres (UNC) Greyhounds. The other 14 teams, on the other hand, are club-based and organized from various provinces and cities in Bicol Region.

Equipped with sufficient ball training, NCF Lady Tigers defeated Titanium, UNC Greyhounds, FHM, and Team SD from the elimination round until the ‘battle for third’ and counter-attacked the strong offenses and defenses of PACHOY in their championship match, thereby securing the Gold Medallion.
Meanwhile, four lady tigers showed excellence in their positions and roles in the heated court:
โ€ข Arah Ellah Panique, Most Valuable Player and Best Open Spiker
โ€ข Angela Ann Louise Zamudio, Best Setter
โ€ข Natazha Kaye Bombita, Best Opposite Spiker
โ€ข Hizkhi Zhik Flores, Best Libero
Furthermore, the NCF women’s volleyball team is in preparation for the return of Bicol Universities and Colleges Athletic League (BUCAL) games, under the supervision of Coach Parley Tupaz.

Unlike the Lady Tigers, the Men’s Volleyball Team of NCF was hesitant to join the tournament, considering their series of conditioning for the return of Bicol Universities and Colleges Athletic League (BUCAL) games, as well as the fact that the team was fresh from the tournament where competitors are the same to this invitational league.
Upon the encouragement of NCF President Mario C. Villanueva, the NCF men’s volleyball team accepted the challenges and proceeded to one-week time training – mastering the change of play, the position of the setter and the libero.
Coach Ian Jake Olaso revealed that the one-week time training focuses on the mastery of the team to the new play and the techniques as opponents, particularly the San Miguel (SMB) – the NCF long-time rival in men’s volleyball, were already familiar with how the NCF Tigers administer offenses and build defenses.
“We anticipated facing SMB in the finals,” Coach Olaso added.
“The training was conducted and the change of play was made to ascertain the championship against SMB,” Coach Olaso furthered.
The heated match between NCF Tigers and San Miguel was a close fight, both exhibiting floor and net defense.
“We expected this heated match, this is just like before. The only difference is, this time, we won,” Coach Olaso said.
When asked about the edge of NCF Men’s Volleyball Team over the other 15 competing teams, Coach Olaso said: “chemistry and communication” – citing these two as significant ingredients in a volleyball team inside and outside the court.
“It is on the Libero that our team leaned onโ€ฆ they are the unsung heroes,” Coach Olaso added.
Meanwhile, aside from winning the gold, four tigers showed excellence in their positions and roles in the heated court:
โ€ข Regan Oarde, Most Valuable Player and Best Setter
โ€ข Marjon Belgica, Best Opposite Spiker
โ€ข Mark Joseph Palmero, Best Server
โ€ข Marshall Nerva, Best Libero (a tiger athlete who played under the flag of SMB)
From the elimination until the championship match, NCF Men’s Volleyball Team won over B-One, Powerhorse, UNC Greyhounds, Arriba Iriga, and San Miguel.
Parallel to the NCF Lady Tigers, the men’s team is in preparation for the return of Bicol Universities and Colleges Athletic League (BUCAL) games on October 8, 2022.
With the loudest roar, the Tigers’ Den is immensely proud of these successes. Congratulations and thank you for defending the title of NCF as Home of the Champions!
